Q: What data is collected and what will researchers do with it?
A: Information about what data will be collected can be found on the ‘About the Trial’ page of this website. Collected data will be initially stored on a secure web-based database (Qualtrics) in an encrypted format. It is then downloaded onto the secure Cardiff University server. Data will be stored next to a trial ID number, not an individual’s name and is, therefore, unidentifiable. Only authorised researchers at Cardiff University and Bangor University will have access to the data for the purposes of data management and analysis.
Q: Will individuals’ names be used?
A: We will assign each participant (pupils, schools, parents, teachers) a trial ID number. In order to link pupils’ baseline and follow-up questionnaire responses, we will record each pupils’ name against their matching trial ID on a list. This list will be stored separately from trial data and only authorised researchers will have access to it. The list will be shredded after follow-up data collection is complete.
Q: If my school is unable to give pupil names (e.g. due to LA policy), how else can data be collected?
A: If you do not want to, or are unable to, provide the names of your pupils please let us know and we will use pseudonyms instead e.g. pupils' initials along with a number. If this is the case, please note that we will require the assistance of teachers to ensure that the correct pupil receives the correct questionnaire.
Q: Who will have access to the collected data?
A: Only authorised staff at Cardiff University and Bangor University will be able to access the data for the purposes of data management and analysis.
Q: Will my school get individual pupils’ data, year group data or whole school data? Will we receive a comparison against other schools?
A: At the end of the trial, your school will receive a report on the pre- and post-trial results for Key Stage 2 pupils at your school. You will also receive a comparison to other participating schools. Data on individual participants and year groups will not be provided.
Q: How long does it take for children to complete the questionnaires, and is it done as a whole class?
A: Questionnaires will be completed as a whole class. It will take around 30-35 minutes for one class to complete the questionnaires. However, we will allocate one hour per class to allow time to set-up, distribute, explain and collect the questionnaires. We may also take a break during the questionnaires.
Q: Will teachers need to stay with the researchers?
A: Yes, KS2 teachers will be asked to be present when researchers are administering the questionnaires to their pupils.
Q: How much time does it take for teachers to complete the questionnaires about their pupils? And when do they need to be done by?
A: All KS2 teachers will complete a questionnaire for each of their KS2 pupils at the start and end of the trial. It will take around 3-5 minutes per pupil. For both time points, this will need to be done within 2 weeks of the researcher’s visit to the school.
Q: What do we do if a parent opts their child out of the programme? Can that pupil still sit in the KiVa lessons?
A: Pupils who have been opted-out of data collection by their parent/carer will not complete questionnaires, however, they will still participate in PSHE lessons as usual. These pupils will be provided with an alternative activity while questionnaires are being completed.
Q: Is it okay if the school continues their current practice alongside the KiVa programme as long as the KiVa programme is realised in full?
A: Yes. As long as the KiVa programme is being fully implemented according to the manuals, schools can continue their current practice too.
Q: Are the two trained KiVa teachers expected to train other teachers, or can they lead on all of the KiVa lessons?
A: KiVa lessons are designed to be delivered by pupils’ usual class teacher. Therefore, the teachers who attend the KiVa training must then train all KS2 teachers as they will be delivering the programme in class as part of usual PSHE provision.
Q: Can the school share the KiVa materials with their partnership schools if those schools are not involved in the trial?
A: No. Trial material must not be shared between schools even if they are not participating in the trial or are assigned to the same group (e.g. both KiVa Schools). KiVa materials are copyrighted and are only provided to schools registered and trained in KiVa. Ensuring communication between schools is kept to a minimum will also help strengthen the integrity and reliability of the trial’s findings.
Q: Are all elements of the KiVa programme provided (e.g., assembly plans)?
A: Most materials used in the delivery of KiVa are provided to KiVa schools including lesson plans and resources, vests and posters. Materials for assemblies and launches are not provided and will be individual to schools.
